What is Cancer?

Physician Talking to Patient

What Is The Definition Of Cancer?

Cancer cells are made when cell reproduction results in an abnormal cell instead of a healthy cell.

These unhealthy, abnormal cells also reproduce.

When they do this in an uncontrolled, instead of a controlled manor, a tumor is formed.

This is the start of a cancer regardless of where in the body it is located.

These abnormal, unhealthy cells are produced in our bodies every day; however, a properly working immune system sweeps them away before they can reproduce.

Trouble begins when our immune system is not working properly from a variety of reasons.

So, what is cancer? Its trouble.

What Does The Immune System do? How Is It Important?

That’s the main purpose of a properly working immune system is to protect us against diseases, toxins, poisons, and other invaders. The immune system is a connection of special cells, proteins, tissues, and organs.

Having a properly working immune system is your best defence against all types of cancers. Learn to feed it properly by watching the video at Diet Solutions.us

Your immune system resembles the system of blood vessels and arteries throughout the body, but along the way are a collection of small nodules or nodes called lymph nodes. The lymph nodes contain a large amount of white blood cells or lymphocytes, our body’s army that crush the foreign body invaders.

We have a large number of lymph nodes in various body locations such as the neck, chest, under the arm pits, in the abdomen, and groan area. We also have them in clusters under the skin in many body locations.

This last one is the area actor, Mr. “T”, had his recent encounter with lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymph nodes. His was a type of lymphoma which concentrated in the nodes just under the skin. So, what is cancer? It could be called an immune system not working right.

Science Experiment Who Was The First Person To Discover Cancer?

The "Father of Medicine" was Hippocrates and is credited with naming cancer around 28-50 B.C.

He first used the words carcinoma and carcinos, and Celsus later changed it to cancer.

How Is Cancer Named?

Cancer is named after the organ or tissue it started, grew, and became a disease.

If it originates in the breast, it is called breast cancer cancer and etc. For example, if it later spreads into neighboring organs or tissues, it is now called metastatic breast cancer in the lymph nodes, and not lymphoma.

Cancers generally fall into one of the following types:

Carcinomas, Sarcomas, Lymphomas, and Leukemia’s.

Carcinomas are the most common type and are found in the cells of organs and tissues. They may be internal or external.

Sarcomas are those of supporting tissues or bones. They can be found in cartilage, fat, connective tissue, muscle, and bone.

Lymphomas are cancers of the lymph nodes and lymph system, which is part of the immune system.

Leukemia’s start, grow, and accumulate in the bloodstream and bone marrow

How Does Cancer Spread?

Cancer cells are a type of cell that grows and reproduce in an uncontrolled pattern.

They divide, and produce other unhealthy cells that no longer do the job or function of the cells they derived from. These cells become a mutation.

Sometimes the cancerous cells grow and stay in the organ or area they start, and then spread from there.

However, other times these mutated cells are picked up by the circulatory or lymphatic systems and travel to neighboring organs and tissues. When they travel and attach themselves in a different location than their origin, the cancer is now said to be a metastatic cancer. So, what is cancer? Its a rude awakening that things aren't working right.

Doctor Looking into Microscope How Is Cancer Detected?

Most cancers are detected because of some symptom or combination of symptoms presents themselves; and the victim now notices them as something unusual.

The victim may notice something unusual right away, or it may take some time, perhaps months or years.

Pain, for example would be noticed right away.

Typical symptoms can be some of the following: pain, fatigue, unintentional weight loss, a lump, discharge (blood or other), cough, change in stool, change in urination, night sweats, fever, change in skin color, sores that do not heal, and headaches.

One or more of these symptoms usually motivates the cancer victim to make a doctor appointment who will typically do a physical exam followed by a number of tests to make a diagnosis.

The type test conducted will depend on the symptom/s and location of the cancer. I have detailed a number of tests conducted for different Types of Cancer. Please see the individual cancer named on that page for the test typically used to detect it. So what is cancer? Its painful!

A Cool Fifty thousand Dollars How Much Money Is Spent On Cancer Research?

Almost $2 Billion Dollars was spent in 2009. Here are the specifics by type:

Lung...$247,600,000

Prostate...$285,400,000

Breast...$572,600,000

Colorectal...$273,700,000

Bladder...$24,100,000

Uterine...$17,100,000

Kidney...$43,400,000

Melanoma...$110,800,000

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma...$122,600,000

That's a total of $1,913,700,000 spent on research in 2009.

What Are Traditional Cancer Treatments, And What Are The Costs?

Can I cover the cost first? For year 2009, estimates vary from $300,000 to $500,000 per patient, per year to treat cancer; and there is no guarantee of life that comes with that price-tag. Why is the cost so much? Drugs to treat cancers are some of the most expensive drugs in the world.

Are you in sticker shock over the cost of treating cancer? You should be; that's up to half million dollars per year per patient. The alternative treatment I had was only a very, very small fraction of that.

Traditional treatments are suggested depending on the named and type of cancer, the stage it is in, and whether or not it has spread. The typical treatments are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

On my Types of Cancer page is a list of different cancers. Go there and then click on the individual cancer, then scroll to find the traditionally used treatment. It should be near the bottom of the page. So what is cancer? It's expensive, that's what it is.

Earth in Hands How Many People Are Diagnosed With Cancer Each Year?

Over 12 million new cancer cases were diagnosed in 2007 according to the American Cancer Sodiety's Global Cancer Facts and Figures, 2008.

How Many People In The World Have Cancer?

In the year 2000, there were 6.2 million deaths worldwide, from all sorts of cancer. More than that number got tumors. Those numbers were 5.3 million men and 4.7 million women got tumors, for a total of 10.0 million people got tumors, while 6.2 million people died from cancer worldwide.

How Many People Die From Cancer Each Year In The U.S.?

In the U.S. there will be about 547,000 people who will die from cancer each year.

That is about 1,500 people per day, each and every day, who will die from cancer.

How Many People Die From Cancer Each Year Worldwide?

The ACS reported that the worldwide number of deaths from cancer is approximately 7.6 million people (about 20,000 cancer deaths a day) in 2009.

People on Globe What Are The Cancer Survival Rates, And How Common Is Cancer?

The 2009 population of the United States is 305 million and counting according to this U. S. News & World Report Article.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Now do some math…nearly half our men will get cancer in their life-time and one third of our women.

Here are some figures to help with the math, found on U. S. Census Bureau Report. They use 2002 population figures of 144 million females, 138 million males for a total of 282.1 million people for that year. If you use the answer you find and multiply it by the cost of treating cancer found above: YOU’LL HAVE A HUGE COST TO TREAT CANCER!

Survival rates depend on the type and stage of cancer, but most figures you’ll find quoted are for 5-year survival. This means the victim is still alive five years later after contracting cancer. I have given lots of these numbers on my Types of Cancer pages, but generally victims of breast cancer, that has not spread, can expect anywhere from 45 to 50% recovery. While a metastasized breast cancer victim has survival rates as low as 3%.

These can be pretty grim numbers, especially if you’re the one with breast cancer; however, 5-year survival rates for prostate cancer are as high as 98 percent.

Compare these survival rates with those given me by the doctor who treated me at the alternative cancer treatment clinic. Those numbers were up to 85% for the direst cases, those the rest of the medical world had given up on. Even in my own case, oncology gave me as short as three months to live, but I came out cancer-free with alternative cancer treatments. Now, I am approaching 3-years cancer-free in March 2010.

So, what is cancer? It's serious. It could kill you.

Provided you don’t wish to transfer your life’s savings to the pharmaceutical industry and medical profession, I suggest you check out where I went for alternative treatments that worked. And, it won’t cost you an arm and leg, kidney or other body part!

Peggy Sue Roberts, December 2009, age 61 Alternative Cancer Treatments That Work!

When I was diagnosed in January 2007, my doctor rated my cancer somewhere between stage 3 and 4. Without checking any alternatives, I started chemotherapy at my health care provider’s oncology department.

I was scheduled for 6-rounds of chemotherapy; each round was a double-bag.

During my second infusion, I experienced a deathly reaction to the chemicals and almost died in the treatment chair.

That near-death experience was the catalyst that sent me in search of Alternative Cancer Treatments.

After weeks of searching, I found a wonderful clinic which was recommended in one of Kevin Trudeau’s books. I devoured the website information and read all the survivor’s testimonials. Then, my husband and I discussed and prayed about the possibilities of me going to the clinic.

It was a big decision to go; it shouldn’t have been, but it was. I had butterflies like I have never had them before. Then, together my husband and I made the decision for me to go to the clinic.

The treatments were for two-weeks; now they do three-weeks for less money than I paid for my two-weeks. I regained my energy and smile back almost instantly after the treatments began.

After returning home, I made an appointment with oncology. He ordered another PET-scan because he couldn’t detect any cancer remaining when he physically examined me. I held my breath for about a week until the results came back…Cancer-Free!!

That was three-years ago. I have full faith that you can become the next cancer survivor by going to the clinic. Take your opportunity now and have a FREE CONFIDENTIAL MEDICAL EVALUATION, to discover if you are a good candidate for Alternative Cancer Treatments.

Get the clinic name by going to my Cancer Survivor page and use the “Clinic Name Request Form” You’ll be so happy you did!!

Thank you for visiting my website and my "What Is Cancer" page.

I wish you and your family the best of health and happiness.
