Throat Cancer
What Is Throat Cancer?
This refers to cancerous tumors that develop in the pharynx or vocal cords (larynx).
The disease occurs when cells in the pharynx or larynx develop genetic mutations which cause cells to grow uncontrollably and continue living after healthy cells would normally die.
The accumulating mutated cells can form a tumor.
This muscular tube is about 5-inches long, that begins behind the nose and ends in the neck connecting to the esophagus.
It contains the voice box which contains vocal cords that vibrate to make sounds when we talk.
Of the roughly 24,000 new cases in the United States each year, the majority of these will be men over the age of 50 who smoke tobacco, use alcohol heavily, or have diets low in fruits and vegetables. This 24,000 number is split about 50/50 between the pharynx and the larynx cancers.
What Are The Symptoms Of Throat Cancer?
Symptoms of this disease include one or more of the following:
• a lump in the pharynx or larynx
• couch that does not go away
• couching up blood
• pain or difficulty swallowing
• abnormal breathing sounds
• ear pain
• a change in the voice or hoarseness
• persistent sore throat that does not go away
• swelling of the neck
• unintentional weight loss
• trouble breathing
• difficulty speaking
• blocked sinuses that will not clear
• bleeding through the nose
• pain in the upper teeth
• headaches
• swelling in the eyes
• chronic sinus infections that do not go away when treated with antibiotics
How Is A Diagnosis Made?
To make a diagnosis, the doctor may make use of an endoscopy which is inserting a thin, lighted tube to take a look and take a small sample of tissue, known as a biopsy.
Other tests used in diagnoses are x-rays, computerized tomography (CT scan), positron emission tomography (PET scans), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI’s).
What Are The Traditional Treatments?
These include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
Surgery may include removal of parts of the throat, mouth, jaw or voice box. This will probably affect the victim’s ability to speak and swallow. It could also affect the outward appearance with feeding tubes and apparatuses to aid in artificial voice for speaking.
Radiation therapy may be used on small tumors or as a preventive treatment after surgery. It could also be used in conjunction with chemotherapy.
I’ve had chemotherapy. It wasn’t fun. It almost killed me after an allergic reaction to one of the drugs. You can read about what happened to me on my
Cancer Treatments
page.
Let me tell you a short story. Just recently my husband, Jim, and I were at the local Veteran's hospital for his appointment. While we were in the waiting room, there was an older man also waiting who used a hand-held device. He placed it to his throat when speaking.
I have to admit, I couldn't understand a word he said. Every time he said something to me in conversation, I had to turn to his wife to interpret, which was frustrating for both of us.
What happened that he had to have his voice box removed? That's right. He smoked like a freight train for years, and now surgery removed the tumor and his voice box (larynx).
Here's my plug again for not smoking. There's a terrible cost to be paid by smokers. You don't have to the one that has to pay. Just quit. Get help as needed.
Alternative Cancer Treatments That Work! Here is a short version of my miracle. When I was diagnosed in January 2007, my doctor gave me as short as 3-months to live and rated my cancer somewhere between stage 3 or 4. Without checking any alternatives, I started chemotherapy at my health care provider’s oncology department. I was scheduled for 6-rounds of chemotherapy; each round was a double-bag administered about two-weeks apart. During my second infusion, I experienced a deathly reaction to the chemicals and almost died in the treatment chair. That near-death experience was the catalyst that sent me in search of Alternative Cancer Treatments. After weeks of searching, I found a wonderful clinic in Mexico which was recommended in one of Kevin Trudeau’s books about Natural Cures. I devoured the website information and read all the survivor’s testimonials. My husband and I discussed and prayed about the possibilities of me going to the clinic, after-all we're talking about Mexico. But, the website testimonials covered the safety issue when the patients all said they were perfectly safe, at all times. It was a big decision to go; it shouldn’t have been, but it was. I had butterflies like I have never had them before. Then together, my husband and I made the decision for me to go to the clinic. The treatments were for two-weeks; now, they do three-weeks for less money than I paid for my two-weeks. I regained my energy and smile back almost instantly after the treatments began. At the end of my two-weeks I felt perfectly healthy and completely rid of cancer. After returning home, I made an appointment with oncology. He ordered another PET-scan because he couldn’t detect any cancer remaining when he physically examined me. I held my breath for about a week until the results came back…Cancer-Free!!
